  • Kermit: Part 3 - World Cup Wishes

An 18 year old Erasmus arrived in Rotterdam, Holland, fresh-faced, wide-eyed and ready to tackle the 2008-09 season with his new club. Erasmus is a name synonymous with Rotterdam – Desiderius Erasmus, a 15th Century priest and humanist, being one of the city’s most famous sons. But, despite his name adorning bridges, hotels and universities throughout the port city, Kermit found adjustment to his new life tough.

In the very different climate of an ensuing northern European winter and without his usual support structures around him Kermit’s first season at Feyenoord was marked by a distinct lack of first team experiences. Coming on from the bench a total of 6 times throughout the campaign, Kermit logged only 68 minutes of first team football that year.

After a welcome break back home in Port Elizabeth, where our film Soka Afrika first meets him and his family, Kermit returns once more to Holland. Keen to play a more active role, Kermit presses his agent Ashley for a loan move and is farmed out to Dutch 1stdivision side Excelsior. In the 2009-10 season he has gone from strength to strength As his new club strive for promotion to the Eredivisie, he has been an ever-present member of the first team, scoring 11 goals and establishing himself as the club’s top scorer.

The film follows Kermit’s progress with his club and then onto Egypt, where he joins up with the U20 national team for his first taste of World Cup football, albeit at junior level. Meanwhile, as we see in Soka Afrika, Kermit has been strongly stating his claim for inclusion in the Bafana World Cup squad, not only with his club form, but also with his performances on the international stage.

Kermit’s destiny now lies in the hands of the re-appointed national team coach, Carlos Alberta Parreira. It’s worth noting that Parrieira is the man who first called Kermit into the U23 squad at the tender age of 17. Already he has called him up to a Bafana training camp in Brazil, where he scored 3 goals in two games and certainly made his mark. Is 2010 going to be his year? Only time will tell…
